Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell: Isle of Rum from Iona

Francis Cadell (1883-1937) was born in Edinburgh, and educated at the Edinburgh Academy. From the age of 16 he studied in Paris at the Académie Julian, where he was in contact with the French avant-garde of the day. While in France, his exposure to work by the early Fauvists, and in particular Matisse, proved to be his most lasting influence. After his return to Scotland, he was a regular exhibitor in Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as in London.

He enjoyed the landscape of Iona enormously, which he first visited in 1912 and features prominently in his work. During the 1920s he spent several summers with Samuel Peploe, another Scottish Colourist, on painting trips to Iona. The quality of the west coast light, coupled with the startlingly bright effects created by sand, sea and sky, proved to be a great impetus for his art. The fluid brushwork and use of vibrant colour, which Cadell had discovered whilst painting in the south of France, was not abandoned when he returned to Scotland and is much in evidence in this painting.

Rum is one of the Small Isles of the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland, in the district of Lochaber. It is the largest of the Small Isles, and the 15th largest Scottish island. The island has been inhabited since the 8th millennium BC and provides some of the earliest known evidence of human occupation in Scotland. The main range of hills on Rum are the Cuillin, usually referred to as the "Rum Cuillin", in order to distinguish them from the Cuillin of Skye. They are rocky peaks of gabbro, forming the Rum layered intrusion.
